Real-Time Stream Flow Data

One of the most important aspects of planning a trip to the river is knowing the current conditions of the water. Experience of the river also helps one understand what flow rates are the best fishing for a given drainage system. How well those waters fish during different conditions can be the difference between a productive day......or a nice trip. There's nothing worse then driving 100 miles to find the river blown out. In the old days, one would have to either drive to find poor condition, or hopefully know someone in the area. These days it takes 5 minutes to find out river flows and water temperatures online at the (U.S. Geological Survey) USGS website.

The first step is to understand the mission of the USGS and what they stand for. Their website is full of information on water quality, its effect on the environment, Ecology, and a ton of information located at their "Science Topics" page. Please check out the Science Topics and read the "environmental issues" section of the website. DO YOUR PART!

The USGS Mission is to provide reliable, impartial, timely information that is needed to understand the Nation’s water resources. WRD actively promotes the use of this information by decision makers to :

  • Minimize the loss of life and property as a result of water-related natural hazards, such as floods, droughts, and land movement.

  • Effectively manage ground-water and surface-water resources for domestic, agricultural, commercial, industrial, recreational, and ecological uses.

  • Protect and enhance water resources for human health, aquatic health, and environmental quality.

  • Contribute to wise physical and economic development of the Nation’s resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
