Cortland Precision Dyna-Tip

"Western Drifter" Fly Line (WF6F)

by Cortland Line Co.

MSRP  - $62.00

Manufacturer's Overview

The “Western Drifter” was engineered to meet the challenges of ‘big water”, East or West. The modified Rocket2 taper loads with a minimum of line for easy pick-ups and quick shots to those fast water pockets, but will also reach out with ease for longer casts. An oversized running line section allows easy mending and better line handling, and our special core and jacket formulation means almost no “memory” for reduced coiling.

The easy to see Mango color helps you track your drift and the specially formulated 3’ “Dyna-Tip” keeps the line tip floating for less drag, easier strike detection and better hook sets. Whether you’re drifting a pair of bead heads under an indicator, fishing dries in the pockets or swinging a streamer, the “Western Drifter” is the new go-to line for "big water anglers” everywhere.

Available in WF 5-8 Floating

Comments: Cortland Line Company Western Drifter Fly Line Review

Upon spooling up the line (6wt) we wanted to test this line out in some extreme conditions here on the Great Lake Tributaries through January and February for steelhead. The body of the line is mango colored with a white "Dyna Tip" which is a extra high floating tip section that aids in keeping a truer drift. We know that the tip section is usually the first to sink especially in cold waters but this wasn't the case with this line. We fished tandem rigs, swung streamers, and high sticking nymphs through riffles & runs with no seen flaws.

The belly of the line is a bit smaller diameter then other lines which made mending a bit easier on those longer drifts. The line pickup was about as nice as we've seen on most other lines in the price range of $55-65. Overall it performed better than expected given the conditions we've fished over the past few months. Casting those longer casts seemed almost effortless with this rocket taper the line loaded and shot fast! I'd put this line up against SA Mastery Taper or Rio Nymph line any day... and I'd be hard pressed not to say I think it may have outperformed them both. This line is definitely a new contender in the high quality fly lines on the market.

We contacted Cortland Line Company about submitting their line for review and with days is was on our doorstep with a complete product line card and CD. What a great company to do business with.

Product Drawbacks:

Price is the only drawback. However, it is appropriately priced for a high quality fly line in the same class.
